Area orchards and cider mills are opening for the season, offering treats such as apple cider, doughnuts, pies and fresh apples, plus activities including corn mazes, petting zoos and playgrounds and coming soon — hay rides and pumpkin patches.

Statewide, the 2023 Michigan apple harvest crop estimate is 32 million bushels (1.344 billion pounds), well above the average annual crop size of approximately 24 million bushels, according to a news release from the Michigan Apple Committee.

The estimate was announced Aug. 18, as part of the USApple Outlook meeting held in Chicago.

The 2022 Michigan harvest was a record 32.38 million bushels, according to the USDA.

“This fall brings the second large Michigan Apple crop in a row for our industry,” Diane Smith, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee, said in the news release.

“As growers continue to plant high-density orchards and adopt other innovative growing practices, Michigan’s apple crop will continue to grow.”
